Updating Elgato Facecam Firmware

Keeping your devices firmware up-to-date is important, and the Elgato Facecam is no different. There is a known issue with earlier versions of the Facecam firmware which causes the settings not to be saved back to the camera. Upgrading the firmware fixes the issue. I shall go through the steps here.
(you can also view my YouTube tutorial on it too embedded at the bottom of the page)

  1. The Facecam firmware is updated via the Elgato Camera Hub software, which is a free download from; https://www.elgato.com/en/downloads.
  1. Ensure no other applications, such as OBS, is currently using the camera. Then open the Camera Hub software. Disable the ‘Video Preview’ (the blue LED on the camera should be off).
Locate the settings button as highlighted in red below.
  1. Normally when you click this button you don’t have many options other than to factory reset, or enable/disable the camera LED. If you hold the CTRL key (or Command key if using a Mac), then click the button, you’ll get the extended options as shown below.
  1. Click the ‘Update Firmware…’ button which will begin the process. Then click the ‘Update’ button.
  1. The firmware upgrade will begin and take a few seconds to prepare.
  1. It will then begin installing which may take up to a minute.
  1. Once the update completes, the camera will restart which may take up to a minute also.
  1. When done, you will be presented with a “update successful” dialogue, simply click ‘Okay’.

That’s the firmware upgrade process complete, and you can use the camera as normal again.
